About Your Visit 

Since you will be investing a good deal of time, money, and energy into therapy, you should choose a therapist carefully. We strongly believe you should feel comfortable with the therapist you choose, and hopeful about therapy. When you feel this way, therapy is more likely to be very helpful to you. The following bios have been made available for you to get to know more about our therapists.

Steven J. Hargrave, M.A., LPC-S, LMFT, NCC

Steven is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a National Certified Counselor.

 

A graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (then USL) with a Bachelor’s degree in Business, he entered graduate school at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana where he completed his Master’s degree in Psychological Counseling.

 

Steven also worked at Nicholls State for many years in the Student Affairs Division first as a Staff Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs, Director of Greek Life and New Student Orientation and finally as the Director of Student Assistance Programs.

 

That position focused on alcohol and drug education and counseling, HIV/AIDS education as well as pre and post-test counseling, sexual assault education and counseling, peer counseling initiative and the coordination of the after-hours university crisis line. He had extensive experience with teen and young adult issues.

 

Upon leaving his administrative position in higher education, Steven accepted a position as the Intake Coordinator for River Parishes Mental Health Clinic in LaPlace, Louisiana outside of New Orleans. There he handled all telephone inquiries, crisis calls and intakes to the clinic as well as keeping a small case load.

 

He then went to St. James Psychiatric Hospital as the Assessment and Admissions Director for the geriatric inpatient facility. In addition to this full-time position he worked PRN (as needed) at Baton Rouge General BHU/CDU (Behavioral Health Unit/Chemical Dependency Unit) and River Oaks Psychiatric Hospital in New Orleans.

 

The birth of his first child brought him back home to Lafayette, where he became the Director of Counseling Services for Charter Cypress Hospital overseeing counseling services for St. Mary Parish. With the constant changes in healthcare, he found his way back to education and to the Iberia Parish School Board.

 

He currently coordinates the Parent Education Programs and Counseling Services for the Central Office.

 

In addition, he is also a member of the National Training Staff for Active Parenting traveling around the United States training counselors and other mental health and education personnel to become Active Parenting Leaders. He is married and he and his wife have three children.

Phyllis Babineaux

She is a native of New Iberia, graduated from New Iberia Senior High and the University of Southwestern La., which is now UL of Lafayette and have a Master of Social Work Degree from LSU.  She hold social work license number 9115 as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

 

She retired from the State of Louisiana in 2013 where she worked as a mental health therapist and supervisor, serving children, adolescents, and families.  Prior to that, she worked with the Department of Children and Families for many years as a foster care case manager, as a medical social worker at University Medical Center and as a rehabilitation counselor with LRS.  In addition, she have worked for the last nine years with home health and hospice companies providing PRN in home social work assessments and counseling.
